A Community’s Lifeline: El Paso Center for Diabetes Debuts Cutting-Edge Facility
El Paso, TX – September 25, 2025 – A wave of hope washed over the Paso del Norte community as the El Paso Center for Diabetes (EPCD) proudly opened the doors to its new, state-of-the-art facility today. This milestone is not just a celebration of a new building; it signifies a profound commitment to enhancing access to diabetes education and support for thousands of individuals and families grappling with this chronic condition.
For over five decades, EPCD has served as a beacon of compassion and expertise in diabetes management. The unveiling of this new center marks a significant leap forward, expanding services and eliminating waitlists, all while creating a welcoming hub for families seeking essential resources, education, and healing. With nearly 15% of El Paso adults living with diabetes—well above the national average of 11.3%—the need for comprehensive care has never been more pressing.

In response, EPCD has designed a facility that addresses these urgent needs head-on. The new center boasts a large classroom dedicated to diabetes self-management education classes, a fully equipped teaching kitchen, a healing garden, and private consultation rooms. These enhancements are expected to expand EPCD’s reach by an impressive 50% annually, equipping thousands more individuals with the tools necessary to lead healthier lives.
“Nearly 15% of adults in El Paso live with diabetes, and far too many lack the support to manage it,” stated Tracy J. Yellen, CEO of the Paso del Norte Health Foundation. “The Paso del Norte Health Foundation invested $3.1 million in this Center to expand services, shorten wait times, and give more people the tools they need to live healthier lives. This new facility builds on that legacy and strengthens EPCD’s role as a community cornerstone.”
The grand opening was a moment of transformation, as Sandra Gonzalez, CEO of EPCD, articulated the mission behind the new facility. “This grand opening marks a turning point for families living with diabetes. We built this Center for our community—to empower individuals, restore health, and ensure no one faces diabetes alone.”
The support from the community has been nothing short of extraordinary. Businesses, physicians, and individual members have stepped forward, showcasing a collective spirit of generosity. EPCD continues to invite further support, offering opportunities to sponsor and name spaces like the teaching kitchen and healing garden. These contributions are vital for ensuring that EPCD thrives for generations to come.
As the community gathers to celebrate this momentous occasion, the El Paso Center for Diabetes encourages individuals to take proactive steps toward their health.
