For many kids, weekends are about sports, video games, and hanging out with friends. For Paul Munoz Jr., weekends meant racing go-karts at just eight years old, pursuing a dream larger than himself. Now, at 20, the El Paso native is making a name for himself in off-road racing, a sport known for its demanding nature and intense competition.

From Go-Karts to Global Stages
What began as a childhood pastime quickly evolved into something significant. Munoz demonstrated exceptional talent early on, moving into adult racing classes before most kids his age could drive. By age 15, while his peers were navigating high school, Munoz was competing professionally in the Best In The Desert Series and later internationally with SCORE International—two highly respected racing organizations. “I always knew this was more than a hobby,” Munoz reflects. “Racing pushes you to focus, to solve problems under pressure, and to keep going even when you’re exhausted. Those lessons stay with you.”
The Grind of a Racer
Munoz’s racing schedule is demanding. Last year, he logged thousands of miles preparing for and competing in some of the sport’s toughest events: the Mint 400, the Baja 500, and the Baja 400. Each race can exceed ten hours, requiring a full team, extensive preparation, and immense physical and mental endurance. Currently competing in the UTV Can-Am Turbo Class, Munoz trains rigorously both on and off the course. He balances intense training with his studies at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), where he’s pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree with a minor in Business.

Eyes on the Future
Munoz’s ambitions extend beyond racing. His engineering background offers him a distinct perspective: he aims not only to drive but also to design and develop parts that advance the sport. While proud of his achievements, Munoz has larger goals: “One day, I want to move up to the Trophy Truck class,” he says with determination. “That’s the pinnacle of off-road racing. And I know with hard work, the right team, and the right sponsors, I can get there.”
More Than Just Racing
Amidst the roar of engines and the dust of desert courses lies a young man committed to determination and discipline. Racing has influenced Munoz’s approach to life—from focusing on his education to tackling challenges head-on. As El Paso witnesses one of its own excel in the racing world, Paul Munoz Jr. demonstrates that with passion and grit, and the relentless pursuit of a dream, the finish line is only the beginning.
