By Wayne Hilton – The Consummate Host
There’s a particular moment every year when winter finally loosens its grip. The light changes, doors open more easily, and ice becomes something we reach for with intention, not necessity. Spring doesn’t arrive all at once, but when it does, it asks us to refresh everything, especially what we’re pouring into our glass.
For me, that refresh often starts with a nod to the past. Some of my earliest entertaining memories were shaped by simple, unfussy drinks made for sharing, long before hosting became a curated art. Those moments inform how I host today: ease first, intention always.
This season, I’m saying goodbye to winter with three cocktails that feel bright, effortless, and perfectly suited for spring entertaining. Each drink uses just three simple ingredients, each can be batched ahead of time, and all share one common thread: limeade.
The Sonic-Inspired Cherry Limeade Cocktail

This cocktail is pure nostalgia with a grown-up twist.
When I was a teenager, Monday nights meant marching band rehearsal, followed by a ritual stop at Sonic Drive-In. Without fail, I ordered a Cherry Limeade. Cold, with crushed ice and impossibly refreshing, it felt like a small reward at the end of a long day. Years later, that memory inspired this cocktail, one that still leans into that unmistakable flavor while feeling right at home on a spring bar.
Ingredients 2 cups vodka, 2 cups Simply Limeade, 3/4 cup maraschino cherry juice
Mix all ingredients together and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. When serving, pour over crushed ice. This detail matters. The crushed ice mirrors the texture of the original Sonic drink and gives the cocktail its signature sparkle and chill.
Garnish with fresh lime wedges and maraschino cherries. The result is playful, familiar, and surprisingly sophisticated.
A Spicy Take on the Classic Frozen Margarita

A frozen margarita is a classic for a reason, but spring calls for a little edge.
My parents loved the simplicity of frozen margaritas made with frozen limeade. Two ingredients, no fuss, and always dependable. It was easy entertaining before we had a name for it.
This version is my adult interpretation of that classic, keeping the ease intact while adding complexity. Fresh muddled jalapeño brings a gentle heat, and a Tajín-rimmed glass replaces salt for a bolder, more layered finish. It’s the same spirit of simplicity, just grown up a bit.
Ingredients 1 cup white tequila , 1 (12-ounce) can frozen limeade , 1/2 large jalapeño, veins and seeds removed, muddled
Combine tequila, frozen limeade, and muddled jalapeño in a blender. Blend until smooth, then add plenty of ice and blend again until thick and slushy.
Rim the glass with Tajín and garnish with a lime wheel.
Hosting Tip: Rim just half the glass with Tajín so guests can control the heat with every sip
A Cool Take on the Classic Mojito

If spring had a temperature, it would feel like this drink.
Bright, herbaceous, and endlessly refreshing, this frozen mojito is designed for warmer days ahead. Limeade provides balance, fresh mint adds aroma and lift, and white rum ties it all together in a cocktail that feels cooling before the first sip.
Ingredients 1 bottle Simply Limeade , 1/2 cup white rum , 3 fresh mint leaves
Blend all ingredients with ice until smooth. Serve immediately and garnish with a generous sprig of mint.
Why This Works for Hosting
Each of these cocktails can be prepared ahead of time, allowing you to stay present with your guests instead of working behind the bar. One common ingredient keeps shopping simple, while three distinct flavor profiles ensure there’s something for everyone.
These cocktails honor the simplicity many of us grew up with, reimagined for how we host today. They’re a fresh start served over ice and a perfect way to welcome spring.
